May, 1993 Kachemak Bay Shorebird Festival was started in 1993, when several concern citizens decided that education was the key to protecting habitat important to migrating shorebirds. When a proposal to back-fill Mariner Park Lagoon for an RV Park, was brought to the City of Homer, these citizens including avid bird-researcher George West, USFWS staff members Poppy Benson and Willy Dunne, John Bushell, Celeste Feneger, Sue Matthews, and Jack Lentfer were instrumental Organizing the 1st Annual Kachemak Bay Shorebird Festival. ââ¬Åto make the shorebirds important to Homer, thus creating additional allies for habitat protectionââ¬Â It is generally held on the weekend, around the 8th.May
