Great Dismal Swamp NWR, Suffolk, Virgina and North Carolina Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge is anything but dismal! Deciduous and coniferous forests with bald cypress, Atlantic white cedar, maples, oaks and sweet gum are teeming with wildlife and birds. Black bear, white-tailed deer and bobcat are among the large mammals that can be found here, as well as more than 50 species of turtles, lizards, salamanders, frogs and toads inhabit the freshwater wetlands. The forests draw more than 93 bird species to nest here including Swainsonââ¬â¢s warblers, pileated woodpeckers and barred owls. The refuge includes a boardwalk trail, which offers many opportunites for wildlife observation, photography and hiking.
