Diagram of electrotyping apparatus of the U.S. Coast Survey. This apparatus allowed for the unlimited duplication of copper plate copies of original engraved copper plate engravings. This in turn was a major step in the ability of the Coast Survey to mass produce nautical charts as each plate was good for only between 500 to1000 impressions on a printing press.
