Village of Attu

Village of Attu. Attu was one of two Aleutian islands captured by Japanese forces during WW II. A Weather Bureau observer, Charles Foster Jones, was shot and killed by the Japanese; his wife and 42 Aleut Americans were taken prisoners of war and taken to labor camps in Japan. 40% of the Aleuts died including Attuan Chief Mike Hodiakoff who had warned U.S. military of coming invasion.
