Paraguay is located at the confluence of a number of globally important ecoregions, namely the upper Paraná Atlantic Forest, the Cerrado, the Argentine Mesopotamian Grasslands, the Chaco (Humid and Dry) and the Pantanal. The southward-flowing Paraguay River divides the country into two distinct regions: the relatively flat Chaco to the west of the river, and the more topographically diverse âOrienteâ to the east.
