On one of the darkest days in the history of the United States of America, the east coast was bathed in bright sunshine. Hurricane Erin turned toward the east that day, with a decrease in forward speed caused by a weakened series of short -wave troughs along the western portion o fthe Atlantic subtropical ridge.
