Northern Snakehead Fish

(Channa argus)

Examples of northern snakeheads (Channa argus) caught in a May 2005 Dogue Creek survey conducted by the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries (VDGIF). All species of snakeheads are considered aquatic invasive species and have been designated an injurious species by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The VDGIF reminds anglers that they remain one of the best sources of information regarding the distribution and collection of these exotic fish. Anglers are asked NOT TO RELEASE a suspect fish, but to get it on ice as quickly as possible. Anglers should report their catches to authorities immediately. Call the Department’s in-state toll-free, 24-hour Snakehead Fish Hotline at 1-800-770-4951 (out-of-state callers should call directly to 540-899-4169 or 804-367-1258) for a positive identification of the fish.
