Monarch butterflies are among the few species of butterflies that migrate every year. They have a challenging journey. Every fall, thousands of monarch butterflies fly west to winter in California and Mexico. They cover the trees there with their bright orange wings. The remarkable sight attracts thousands of tourists. In the Spring, the butterflies fly back to their summer homes, where they will lay eggs and die. A typical butterfly will make just one round trip during its lifetime.
