In the courtship, the male hooded merganser erects its fan-shaped white crest, expands its throat, and utters a rolling, froglike croak that can be heard a half-mile away. It may even pursue a potential mate underwater. The smallest merganser in North America, it consumes more crayfish and acquatic insects than it does fish.
