Handwritten note “Library for the Survey of the Coast” believed to be written by Ferdinand Hassler, founder and first Superintendent of the United States Coast Survey, the oldest science agency in the U.S. Federal Government. The NOAA Central Library traces its roots to the Hassler procuring books and instruments for the Survey of the Coast between 1811 and 1815.
