BROMELIAD, OKEFENOKEE NWR. Employees at national wildlife refuges work to maintain and preserve lands which provide virtually every type of habitat needed for the survival of fish and wildlife. Southern refuges, like Georgia’s Okefenokee, include bayous, flooded bottomland, hardwood areas, swamps, and coastal estuaries. They provide important habitat for waterfowl and for such tropical plant species as the bromeliad shown here.
