First Reading of the Emancipation Proclamation by the artist Francis Bicknell Carpenter. The map in the lower right hand corner is Edwin Hergesheimer’s Map Showing the Distribution of the Slave Population while the map on the table is Map of the State of Virginia compiled at the Coast Survey Office.
