This Fred Flintstone-like contraption is an early dune buggy – standard mode of transportation on waterlogged Gulf coast national wildlife refuges, except when it bogs down, as in this 1949 view of refuge workers at Sabine National Wildlife Refuge, near Lake Charles, Louisiana, a Bayou State mecca for alligators, roseate spoonbills, and muskrats and nutria.
