Balcones Canyonlands NWR, Austin, Texas: Balcones Canyonlands National Wildlife Refuge is one of our newest national wildlife refuges. This 41,000-acre oasis of juniper-oak habitat in the hill country northwest of Austin, Texas, was established to protect the endangered black-capped vireo and golden-cheeked warbler. The boardwalk and observation deck allow the visitor easy access and a shaded platform for watching and photographing wildlife.
