Allens’ hummingbird is almost entirely confined as a breeding bird to the mountains along the Pacific coast of California. Here, during the nesting season, the males occupy small territories on wooded hillsides, driving away any other bird that encroaches upon this little plot of land. Even large hawks and falcons are no match for these fierce little hummingbirds. When nesting is completed, most Allen’s hummingbirds fly nonstop to central Mexico for the winter.
